Top Gun: Maverick is an iconic film for many reasons. Not only did it mark the return of everyone’s favourite pilot, Tom Cruise, but at the global box office, the film also hit the $1 billion mark, making it a career-best for the megastar. Now, the film has crossed another domestic box office milestone, leaving Titanic behind on the list.
The fighter-jet-action-packed saga has surpassed Titanic’s box office collection to become the seventh-biggest film ever at the domestic box office. The film earned $662 million in ticket sales. The James Cameron film, which once was the highest-grossing film of all time, accumulated a total of $659.5 million domestically. Top Gun: Maverick is on its eleventh weekend of theatrical release, and earned $1.9 million on Friday.
Avengers: Infinity War tops Tom Cruise’s movie, which currently stands as the sixth-highest grossing domestic release ever with $678 million. The other names on the list include Black Panther ($700 million), Avatar ($760 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804 million), Avengers: Endgame ($853 million), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million).
The hotshot Naval jet pilot, who fans got introduced to in 1986, returned after 30 years since the events of Top Gun. The film shows Maverick training a group of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission. A new joinee is Rooster (Miles teller), the son of Maverick’s late wingman Goose.
