2020 could be remembered for several reasons, but the films and shows this year churned out was one to remember. Since we’re almost near the end of 2020, Netflix has done us all a favour and released a list of most-watched titles of the year.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui-Radhika Apte thriller Raat Akeli Hai, Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction, Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard and the Bollywood multi-starrer Malang were some of the titles that enjoyed a lot of success on the streaming platform, with Anurag Basu’s anthology, Ludo, being the most-watched comedy movie of the year.
Drama also had a lot of takers, unsurprisingly, since we all love to have some of that in our lives. The category was filled with several popular films and series, including Guilty, Masaba Masaba, Bulbbul, She, Miss India, Never Have I Ever and Emily in Paris, but the Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Gunjan Saxena is what came out on top with the most views according to Netflix’s data.
In the regional section, Kappela (Malayalam), Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal (Tamil), Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (Telugu), and Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya (Telugu) were the most-watched.

Indians showered a lot of love and devoted a lot of their time to foreign programs as well. Spanish drama Money Heist, German series Dark and the Turkish series The Protector had a large amount of Indian viewers this year. India’s obsession with everything South Korean also paid off for K-Dramas like The King: Eternal Monarch, Kingdom (S2), It’s Okay to Not Be Okay and Start-up.
Romance was another category that found many takers. Audiences heavily viewed films and series like Love Aaj Kal, Ginny Weds Sunny and Mismatched.
But the Netflix report indicated that non-fiction series and documentaries saw the biggest jump this year. The genre saw a whopping 250 per cent rise in viewership. Indians binged on Too Hot to Handle, Indian Matchmaking and the newly-released Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, while Bad Boy Billionaires, The Social Dilemma and Money Heist: The Phenomenon were the most-watched documentaries.
