After the success of Euphoria season 2, Sam Levinson is expanding his relationship with HBO with a new show called The Idol, starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp in the lead. While the network has yet to set a premiere date, the show’s first teaser has already come out, sending fans into a frenzy.
But first things first, here’s what the official synopsis reads – “Co-created by The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, the six-episode drama is set against the backdrop of the music industry and centres on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.”
And the teaser spares no time in setting the show’s theme, with the footage opening with a montage of Hollywood mansions, parties, fast cars and of course lots of cocaine. The overall theme of the show seems a lot more fast-paced than Euphoria, in comparison. From what we gather, The Idol seems to be a deep dive into the behind scenes of the music industry and Hollywood.
Alongside The Weeknd and Depp, the show also stars Jennie Kim, from BLACKPINK along with Troye Sivan, Suzanna Son and Steve Zissis. Also in the cast are Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga and Anne Heche in recurring roles.
Both The Weeknd and Depp have featured in movies and TV before, with the musician appearing as a version of himself in the Safdie brother’s 2019 movie Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler. The singer has also done voiceover work on American Dad and The Simpsons before. Meanwhile, Depp has credits in films including Wolf, Crisis, Silent Night and The King, which also starred Robert Pattinson and Timothée Chalamet.
While we still wait for HBO to drop a full trailer, here’s what the internet has been saying about the upcoming Sam Levinson show.
