The Man With The Golden Voice: Sonu Nigam’s Superb Mimicry Skills

Watch out for his impersonation of Kailash Kher.

Sonu Nigam has given several great songs to Bollywood – from the passionate Yeh Dil Deewana to the infectious Satrangi Re, from the painful Tanhayee to the relaxing Kal Ho Na Ho. Starting off by singing Mohd. Rafi covers, Sonu has certainly established himself as one of the greatest singers in Bollywood history.

He doesn’t need to do comedy, but then, a true entertainer doesn’t believe in hiding their talent. Sonu is a great mimicry artist and can mimic a lot of his contemporaries perfectly. Even though his tone is a little exaggerated sometimes, it’s not insulting to the singer at all. After all, imitation is the best form of flattery.

Just listen to this interview between Johnny Lever and Sonu Nigam. His acting career may have bombed, but when it comes to mimicry he is up there with the very best. In this video, he mimics a lot of singers like SP Balasubramaniam, Kumar Sanu and Adnan Sami. But, the one that stands out is his impersonation of Kailash Kher.

Then there is this video, where Sonu takes Titanic’s famous My Heart Will Go On, and imagines what the song would sound like if Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan sung it. The result is hilarious. And there’s a point, where while mimicking Udit, he says, “English song, sung by me.. Wah Wah.”

And surprise, surprise. Sonu can’t just mimic male singers, he can mimic female singers too. Like he mimics Usha Uthup so beautifully in the above video.

In this, Sonu sings the female part of Aaj Ki Raat from Don wonderfully.

We wish the wonderful singer a very Happy 44th Birthday, and hope that we see a lot many more wornderful songs from him in the coming future. Even though Arijit Singh is the flavour of the season now, Sonu Nigam will remain special for us 90s kids due to the many unforgettable numbers he gave us.
