Squid Game: Season 1 Recap and What to Expect from Season 2
Squid Game: Season 1 Recap and What to Expect from Season 2

As the second season approaches, one thing is certain: Squid Game still holds up a mirror to our world—and the reflection isn’t always pretty

In 2021, Squid Game exploded onto Netflix like an unstoppable juggernaut, blending visceral thrills with biting social commentary. The South Korean phenomenon didn’t just break records—it redefined what streaming hits could look like. With Season 2 just around the corner, let’s step back into the twisted world of masked overlords, deadly games, and a whole lot of existential dread.

How It All Began

The concept was deceptively simple. Take 456 people drowning in debt, offer them the chance to win ₩45.6 billion (roughly $31 million), and pit them against each other in childhood games with deadly stakes. From the moment the haunting tones of “Red Light, Green Light” set the tone, it became clear: survival wasn’t just a matter of skill but brutal luck and moral compromise.

At the heart of the chaos was Seong Gi-hun, an unemployed gambler and flawed but likeable protagonist. Over the course of six harrowing games—think tug-of-war, glass-bridge balancing acts, and the now-infamous honeycomb challenge—Gi-hun formed tenuous alliances with characters like the selfless Abdul Ali, the sharp-witted Kang Sae-byeok, and his childhood best friend Cho Sang-woo.

By the time the dust settled, Gi-hun was the last man standing, but victory came at a steep price. His win was marred by Sang-woo’s tragic sacrifice and the realisation that the kindly old man, Player 001, had orchestrated the entire bloodbath. Adding to the trauma, Gi-hun discovered the games hadn’t ended—they were still preying on desperate souls.

What Happened Next?

The first season left us with more questions than answers. Why did Oh Il-nam, the frail old mastermind, join the games himself? What drives The Front Man, the enigmatic figure overseeing the chaos? And what happens to Detective Hwang Jun-ho, who uncovered the truth about his brother’s role in the games only to be shot and left for dead?

Gi-hun’s story ended on a cliffhanger. After giving some of his winnings to Sang-woo’s grieving mother and deciding to visit his daughter in the United States, he has a change of heart. Spotting recruiters once again luring people into the game, he abandons his flight and sets his sights on dismantling the system from within.

Season 2: What’s in Store?

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk promises a darker, more introspective second season. Gi-hun returns, fuelled by the trauma of his first experience and a determination to end the madness. Teasers hint at new games, fresh faces, and heightened stakes. The Front Man and Detective Hwang are set to return, alongside a mysterious new cast that includes Kang Ha-neul and Yim Si-wan.

While the moral dilemmas and gut-wrenching twists are expected, there’s also the question of whether Gi-hun’s efforts to infiltrate and destroy the games will come at an even greater cost. Will he succeed, or will he become another pawn in this deadly game of power?
