Bloomberg News secured the deal at a whopping $900 million(generally Rs. 6,675 crores), which would make it one of the biggest in TV history.
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone became the talking point of Hollywood after news broke that series creators landed a $900-million deal with ViacomCBS to continue the animated show through 2027 (bringing the total number of seasons to 30) and create 14 original “South Park” movies exclusively for the company’s Paramount+ streaming platform. The streaming platform was launched in March in the US to compete in an already crowded marketplace led by the likes of Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime.
Chris McCarthy of MTV Entertainment said in a statement that making new content with “tremendous talent like Matt and Trey, is at the heart of our strategy to continue growing Paramount+.”
The series revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their exploits in and around the titular Colorado town. South Park became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a wide range of topics towards an adult audience. It’s pilot was aired in 1997 and since then its been going on and is considered a cult classic.
“Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years,” said Parker and Stone in the joint statement.
“We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats,” they added.
Matt Stone in his interview for Bloomberg said that the mega-deal gives them,” fuck you’ money.” “The show is 22 minutes. It’s a sitcom. It is ancient, in a way. But we still really love that,” Stone said. “There are ‘South Park’ episodes that are high concept enough where if you wanted to make a movie you could. We wanna scratch both itches. We feel like we can.”
The next season of “South Park” will launch on Comedy Central in 2022. The first two new “South Park” films will debut this year.
