What do Vyjayanthimala, Rekha, Sridevi, Mouni Roy, Mallika Sherawat, Reena Roy and Shraddha Kapoor have in common? They’ve all played (or are going to play) a Naagin onscreen. A Naagin is a shape-shifting woman who can transform into a serpent. Some believe that this ability is granted to them by Lord Shiva.

 

Bollywood has always been intrigued by the Naagin avatar and so has India, in general. When Mouni Roy’s Naagin released on television, it was one of the most-watched shows in the country. While Sridevi has essayed multiple iconic characters, her Naagin avatar is, perhaps, her most memorable. Shraddha Kapoor sure has some big shoes to fill when it comes to playing a Naagin.

 

The trilogy, titled Nagin, will be helmed by Vishal Furia and is being produced by Nikhil Dwivedi.

 

Shraddha Kapoor was last seen in Baaghi 3 and said that she was excited to play the role of a Naagin.

 

Shraddha Kapoor’s statement

 

“It’s an absolute delight for me to play a naagin on screen. I have grown up watching, admiring and idolising Sridevi ma’am’s Nagina and Nigahen and always wanted to play a similar role rooted in Indian traditional folklore. It’s like playing an iconic character, which has always been so fascinating for the audience,” the actor said in a statement.

 

This Naagin installment wil be heavy on VFX and special effects. The ‘Icchadhari Naagin’ character has been intensely fascinating for Indians and Bollywood. Ekta Kapoor’s show, Naagin, is currently on its fifth season and doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon.

 

It’ll also be interesting to see what new perspective Furia’s trilogy brings to the Naagin mythology. Will she be tamed yet again? Will she be a villain? Will she be a millennial Naagin? How relevant is Shraddha Kapoor’s portrayal of this character going to be?

 

These are questions that we do not have answers to as of now. But here’s hoping the makers of the film can do something new with this character that has given Bollywood some of its greatest hits.
