Gone are the days when age was a deterrent for those who want to achieve their dreams. Bollywood, too, is trying to change the game. Over the years, while the quantity may be low, we’ve had some movies of quality that showed us age is just a number.
Here’s looking at a few more such films:
Badhaai Ho
Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao stole the show in Badhaai Ho. The film revolves around the life of Priyamvada (Neena Gupta), a middle-aged woman, who discovers that she is pregnant. Priyamvada and her husband Jeetender Kaushik (Gajraj Rao) break the news to their sons, played by Ayushmann Khurrana and Shardul Rana. The two are subjected to the constant taunts from family and society. The film addresses the stigma related to pregnancy in an advanced age and shows how a good script can deliver the right message.
Aranyak
Ageism in the Hindi film industry has always been a topic of discussion, especially when it comes to female actors. It’s only recently that people have started talking about it. The streaming platforms have opened up new opportunities for so many artistes. Raveena Tandon recently made her comeback with Netflix’s Aranyak. She plays a cop, Kasturi Dogra, posted in the sleepy town of Sironah. Kasturi, who has taken a sabbatical, finds it impossible to hand over her duties to her replacement, Angad Malik (Parambrata Chattopadhyay). The mismatched officers leave no opportunity to get into scuffles, but they join hands when a puzzling murder leads to a web of suspects.
Kaun Pravin Tambe?
Shreyas Talpade-starrer Kaun Pravin Tambe? Revolves around the life of a cricket underdog Pravin Tambe, who became the oldest ever IPL debutant. The story will inspire millions who believe that age is a barrier to achieving great things in life. Tambe, at the age of 41, demonstrated to the world that resilience without giving up is the only mantra to success.
Sharmaji Namkeen
Starring Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal’s Sharmaji Namkeen stole our heart. Retired manager Brij Gopal Sharma (played by both Kapoor and Rawal) discovers that he cannot sit idle, and devises new ways to occupy himself. During his various plans, Sharma reunites with his love for cooking, and that gets him work as a “specialist cook” in a kitty party. Although society and his own son tried to belittle his talent, he holds his ground. It’s never too late to chase things that make our hearts smile.
Panga
Panga talks about a mother’s unconditional love for the family, but not at the expense of her own aspirations. When Kangana Ranaut’s character, a former kabaddi world champion, is urged by her family to make a comeback in the sport, she strongly combats her internal conflicts and society’s expectations of her.
English Vinglish
When Sridevi’s character, a housewife and caterer, is tired of being taunted by her family for not knowing English, she attempts to learn the language. Despite her age, she gives herself a chance which helps her to rediscover herself and reinstate her worth.
Saand Ki Aankh
