What is Sex Education without the iconic Maeve Wiley? Maeve Wiley, played by Emma Mackey, has become an ultimate fan favourite character ever since the show debuted in 2019.
Mackey has now hinted that she won’t be staring in the hit Netflix show for much longer. In a recent interview, the 25-year-old spoke about the “bittersweet nature” of moving on from the show.
“It’s a complicated thing to me. Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast are phenomenal. I genuinely care about them all a lot and I made lifelong friends. We’ve kind of grown-up together,” she said. “But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can’t be 17 my whole life,” she added.
Mackey added that she may look to move into filmmaking at some point, “I’m very attracted and seduced by the idea of writing a film and conceiving something, being there at the conception of a story, working at it, seeing it through and then choosing a team.”
At the end of season 3, Wiley finds an opportunity to study in the US. She seems to be uncertain about the opportunity at first considering it meant leaving Otis after they finally confessed their feelings to each other. She tells him that they will see each other soon and the season ends with her smiling to herself on the bus as the season ends with her leaving Moordale behind.
Apart from Sex Education, Mackey has also starred in Kenneth Branagh’s follow-up to Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile. The film also stars Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal and others. It was slated for 2020 release but got postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier this year, Ncuti Gatwa had shared special details about the upcoming season of the series. He revealed: “This season, Eric returns back to his culture a lot more and I think those scenes were very special, just having a set where the majority of people were Black. And it was really great and really powerful and represented Eric’s culture and his family. Those are always quite profound moments.” He admitted that it “feels good” that he gets to play a character that doesn’t usually get represented on such a big show.
