Selena Gomez is suing the makers of a mobile game alleging they used her likeness without permission.
The Clothes Forever Styling Game app lets players dress celebrity avatars that resemble stars such as the Taylor Swift, Kardashians, Adele and Gomez. The app is available on Apple’s App Store, allowing the users to buy “diamonds” for prices ranging from $.99 up to $99.99, and to go on virtual shopping trips with celebrities.
According to Variety, Gomez alleges that one of the characters is based on her, and that she has never agreed to have her likeness used in any mobile game. Specifically, an image used for the cover of 2015 Flare magazine, without permission.
The singer and actress is suing the China-based seller of the game, Guangzhou Feidong Software Technology Coas well as the British company, MutantBox Interactive Limited, that holds copyrights to the game. The suit states that Gomez has always “carefully curated all endorsements and business opportunities” in a way that advances her goals and her image as a role model for youth.
It also describes Clothes Forever as “bug-riddled” software that could damage Gomez’s reputation and make it more difficult to market her own fashion-focused games.
