Selena Gomez has made a comeback to the screen. Gomez originally rose to her fame as a child star for Disney before she took to music.
The 29-year-old singer has turned actor once more for the Hulu mystery-comedy series Only Murders in the Building, in which she stars with Hollywood comics Steve Martin and Martin Short.
“To be honest I don’t know if I’m a good actor. I just do my job and hope I can live up to these incredible people,” she said in an interview for the US issue of OK! magazine.
“I will say, though, that I learned a lot from the first episode to the end. I even joked to [co-creator] John [Hoffman] that I wished I could redo the first episode because I felt I had developed a lot.”
“I signed my life away to Disney at a very young age,” she told. “I was a kid and didn’t know what I was doing. I was just running around on the set.”
She goes on to explain that wanting to experience a different facet of acting was the primary reason for her to go through with the project in the first place. “The level of sophistication of the material is the reason why I wanted to do this. Now, I feel like a sponge and I soak up all the wisdom I can.”
“It’s nice to be back on TV and be cast as my actual age, which never happens,” she concluded.
Selena Gomez has hinted that she might be taking a step back from music.
“It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously,” she said in her March 2021 cover interview with Vogue. “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’”
“I’m not saying I want a Grammy,” she had additionally said in an interview with Elle. “I just feel like I’m doing the best I can, and it’s all about me. Sometimes, that can really get to me.”
If she does, in fact, retire, many speculate that she may be returning to acting.
She has, however, confirmed that she is working on at least one more album.
