The news is out. Ranveer Singh will essay the role of Kapil Dev in a sports film by Kabir Khan. To say that we are excited would be an understatement. Kapil is undisputedly one of the greatest cricketers in the history of cricket, not just Indian cricket. His skills with both bat and ball were supreme, and he could have kept his place in the side with either of these two skills.
There are a lot of similarities between the pair. Both of them can be considered jack-of-all-trades. While Kapil could bat and ball and shoulder the man management responsibility of being a captain, Ranveer Singh can dance, cry, laugh and deliver all kinds of dialogues with perfection. I am sure that Ranveer can ace the look, the body language and even the Punjabi accent with grace. I am sure that Kapil Dev himself when he sees the film, will be full of praises for Ranveer. On top of that, Ranveer also seems as tall as Kapil. Ranveer Singh is 1.77 m while Kapil Dev was 1.83 m. A difference that won’t look too big on screen.
“As a young schoolboy when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup. I had no idea that from that day onwards cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalising the script,” Kabir Khan, the film’s director was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Next, Ranveer Singh will be seen in Padmavati. And we have to admit, as crazy as he may seem in real life, he looks very intelligent when it comes to film and advertisement choices. His creativity is at par with the greatest Hollywood actors, and it’s no wonder that Sanjay Leela Bhansali would compare him with Daniel Day Lewis, an actor Ranveer looks up to.
Playing Kapil wouldn’t be a piece of cake, but if there’s one actor who can do it, it’s Ranveer.
