Priyanka Chopra or Gillian Anderson: Who Would Make a Better Bond?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a woman as secret agent James Bond? Well, here’s the scoop: our very own Priyanka Chopra and X-Files star Gillian Anderson have expressed their desire to play the part and are contending (amongst fans, of course) for the top job.

Priyanka Chopra, who garnered fame and accolades, worldwide, with her portrayal of an FBI recruit in the television series Quantico is now going to be seen in the film adaptation of Baywatch. Recently, in her interview with Complex, she expressed interest in playing the role of James Bond, than merely being 007’s ladylove.

“I get that all the time.. But f*** that – I wanna be Bond”, she says.

Gillian Anderson is another contender for the title of 007 and has been a top choice amongst her fans. She also retweeted a Bond movie poster created by one of her fans stating her desire to portray the role.

So on a celebratory note, here is a throwback of our story with Priyanka where she talks about being every geek’s fantasy woman, her tryst with poetry and the dark side of Bollywood.

How book-savvy is Priyanka Chopra? “I once tried my hand at poetry, loved Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela’s autobiography and, hypothetically speaking, want to meet Nathuram Godse.”

Is she a geek? “I am every geek’s fantasy,” Chopra says. When she uses the word “redunculous” to describe a gadget, she quickly follows it up with an explanation. “Redunculous, you know, redundant + ridiculous, just in case you are wondering what that is.” Not bad, I tell her. Any other fun portmanteaus? “Off hand, I remember ‘stunk’. When something stinks big time, it stunks. ‘Skunk’ + ‘stink’.” Has she heard of ‘ignoranus’ – a person who is both stupid and an asshole? Chopra chews on the word, enunciates it and nods her head.

What does she think of her growing success? “In my own way I’ve been working at it [career] and right from the time I started my career, I’ve always lived by this quote from SRK: ‘Failure is not an option.’ So, yeah, I’m giving it my best shot. Also, my parents have always told me to completely bear the consequences of my actions, that’s one, and I think I’m always open to feedback, from everyone, from my driver to my manager to a spot boy. I always try and listen.”

What are her thoughts on Bollywood? “My reading of Bollywood? There are three kinds of people here: the crème de la crème, who are quite okay, the men and women who are on their way to the top, who too are not bad people, but the third kind is the most dangerous. These are the fixers, the men who talk and act big, take advantage of your desperation and take you for a ride. So, when I meet newcomers, both men and women, I tell them that maybe, this desire to make it big here is not all that great a thing. It has its darker side.”

Who’s going to be the next big star? “I think Ranbir (Kapoor), Shahid (Kapoor) and Imran (Khan) are all good.” Imran, he’s had what one-and-a-half hits in about three years, right? “Accha, Okay, Ranbir and Shahid, they will go a long way. Both are superstar material and both have such different styles of working.” Chopra says Ranbir is effortless and there’s a danger if you are cast opposite him. “It’s like he’s joking around, playing pranks, and generally being a clown on the sets, so you tend to lose focus, but once the camera is switched on, he just transforms.” And Shahid? “Oh, he’s so focused on the sets, totally dedicated, and totally into the role at all times. He makes you want to be like him.”
