Digital streaming gives movies a new lease on life in terms of visibility and viewership. Moreover, it’s always a great way to garner hefty returns in case of a BO dud. While some movies take their time to release on OTT, there are quite a few releases in the recent past that began streaming immediately after hitting the theatres. And well, the commercials for the quotes are unbelievably high!
Come, let’s take a look at some of the recent movies that raked in big bucks as part of such deals.
Laal Singh Chaddha
Aamir Khan had reportedly signed a deal with Netflix for Rs 90 crores. Earlier, the deal went off the table because apparently, Khan had asked for Rs 150 crores, along with a condition that it will stream only after six months. Netflix however couldn’t agree to those terms and hence backed out of the deal. But, things have changed for sure. So, keep an eye out to know when LSC begins to stream.
Shamshera
This Ranbir Kapoor starrer failed miserably at the box office. Reports now suggest that the OTT rights of this movie have been brought by Amazon Prime Video for Rs 80 crores. The movie will stream from mid-September if social media is to be believed.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is already streaming on Netflix. The movie did quite well at the Indian and global offices as well. According to the reports, Netflix sealed the deal with the makers of the movie for Rs 30 crores.
Gangubai Kathiawadi
Even before the Alia Bhatt starrer hit the theatres, rumors were rife about a subsequent OTT release. Turns out, the speculations were right and the movie started streaming soon after its release. The streaming rights acquired by Netflix were for Rs. 70 crores.
Heropanti 2 and Bachchan Pandey
Sajid Nadiadwala is a good businessman. During the lockdown, he cracked a multi-film deal with Amazon Prime Video for Rs. 250 crores. There are 5 of his films in the deal, out of which Heropanti 2 and Bachchan Pandey have been released. Rest in the pipeline are Kick 2, Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali, and Satyanarayan Ki Katha.
Jhund
Amitabh Bachchan’s Jhund was released at a time when there was an anticipation of theatres functioning to their full capacity again. While it did release in the theatres, the OTT rights were reportedly sold to Zee5 for Rs 30 crores. The movie is available for people to watch.
