“Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars
And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap
We’ll all stay skinny ’cause we just won’t eat,” reads an unforgettable song by Nickelback.
Harry Styles would have had a similar dream when he went for an audition in X Factor UK. Unfortunately, he didn’t get selected as a solo artist, but as luck would have it, he was made part of a group. Styles’ named it One Direction, and the rest, as they say is history. The band became an instant sensation, with their single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ debuting at number one on the UK billboard chart.
Styles had all the money, fame and he dated some extremely beautiful women like Caroline Flack and Taylor Swift. He just needed to keep going – maintain that popularity with stage shows and new singles, much like other popstars like Justin Bieber, Drake, Jason Mraz and Ed Sheeran. But, probably, that wasn’t satisfying him creatively. He needed a new challenge, and he put all his star-ego aside to audition for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. And landed the role, after competing against hundreds of other candidates.
Interestingly, Nolan didn’t know a lot about Styles’ fame and pop star status. “I don’t think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was. I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn’t really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table,” Nolan was quoted as saying by Associated Press.
“Anytime you get to work with someone who is so passionate about what they’re doing. That’s a privilege in itself. I think Chris, he knows everything about the project. So he is kind of the conductor, but he also knows how to play every instrument as well,” Styles said at Dunkirk’s premier.
Styles’ didn’t fail, and just in his debut film, he has become a serious contender for the Best Supporting Actor award in next year’s Oscars. Not many singers can boast of an equally illustrious acting career. Justin Timberlake did well. Closer home, Kishore Kumar was fabulous.
Also knowing Styles, we wouldn’t be surprised if he decides to write and direct a film. And be good at it.
