James Bond star Daniel Craig had stated that the decision to push the release of his upcoming 007 film, No Time to Die from November to spring 2021 was taken so as to allow fans to enjoy the movie at the same time around the world.

“This thing is just bigger than all of us,” Craig had told Jimmy Fallon. “We want to release the movie at the same time all around the world and this isn’t the right time. So fingers crossed, April 2 is going to be our date,” he had added.

Now, Variety reports that streaming platforms like Apple and Netflix had explored the possibility of an OTT release for the Daniel Craig vehicle but MGM, the studio behind the movie, reportedly was seeking a deal of around $600 million.

“We do not comment on rumors. The film is not for sale. The film’s release has been postponed until April 2021 in order to preserve the theatrical experience for moviegoers,” an MGM spokesperson had however told Variety.

According to insiders, due to the delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, MGM is reportedly said to have lost $30 million to $50 million.

No Time To Die cost more than $250 million and is part of multiple promotional partnerships to help with the costs – including those with Land Rover, Omega watches, and Heineken. It is assumed that if the studio does go ahead with an OTT release, these companies would also have to be on board with the plans and this could prove to be a challenge for the studio.

“I’m so glad I came back and did this last one. The story, it just didn’t feel complete and I needed a break. Once I had and we started talking about storylines and things we could do I was like, ‘I’m in’,” Craig had said about his final film as James Bond.

As to what advice he would give his James Bond successor, he had only one thing to say:

“Don’t fuck it up. It’s a beautiful amazing thing.”
