Netflix has come a long way since 2014 when it scored its first Oscar nomination for documentary feature The Square. Six years later, it has scored 24 nominations in 2020 more than any other traditional movie studios.

The streaming giant secured the nominations for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman which scored 10 nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, which bagged six nominations. With two movies nominated for the best-picture category, Netflix’s chances of winning the best picture will be greater at securing the golden trophy.

Last year, Netflix’s Roma received 10 nominations and scored 3 wins, including Best Director, but lost the best-picture award to Green Book.

According to Business Insider, a big chunk of success can be attributed to Netflix’s vice president of films, Scott Stuber who took the role in 2017 when Netflix won its first Oscar for the best documentary short subject for The White Helmets. A year later, Netflix bagged it’s first Oscar for the best documentary feature for Icarus. 

“Scott has found and continues to find, a balance between the traditional Hollywood model and Netflix’s innovations,” Baumbach, the Marriage Story director, told Business Insider. “He also does what he says he’s going to do. I’ve never been let down by Scott.”
