FIFA and its scandals are nothing new to football fans around the world. But many might not know the dark underbelly of the lies and the corruption that made it happen. That was until today when Netflix dropped the trailer of its upcoming documentary called FIFA Uncovered.
Scheduled for November 9, just eleven days before the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar, the limited series will lead viewers into one of the biggest financial scandals in the world. From the looks of it, the trailer promises to explore some of FIFA’s most controversial moments in the past decade and more. This includes the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup and the aftermath which followed it.
For some context, back in 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted 14 high-ranking officials on a range of charges, involving bribery, racketeering, fraud, and money laundering. Just last year alone, the DOJ announced that the officials were directly working to secure Russia’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup. The same documentary will also shed the light on the bribery scandal that unfolded during Qatar’s bid for the 2022 World Cup.
Here’s what the official synopsis reads – “From power struggles to global politics, an exploration of FIFA reveals the organization’s checkered history — and what it takes to host a World Cup.” Safe to say, a lot is riding on the documentary. Here’s how the fans have reacted to it so far.
