With Ms. Marvel set to launch this June, the MCU is set for a heavy dose of South Asian representation in its character roster. With fans treated to a new series of character teasers earlier this week, we also got to see a small milestone for Indian cinema as Bollywood actor Mohan Kapur got his own promotional poster for the series.
The show also includes other big names from cinema, like Farhan Akhtar and Fawad Khan, both of whom are yet to have character reveals. The titular character, Kamala Khan, happens to be Pakistani herself, and is played by Canadian-Pakistani actor Iman Vellani. Mohan Kapur will be playing the hugely important role of her father, Yusuf.
In the comics (pictured above), Yusuf is characterized as a serious, intelligent Pakistani immigrant who settles down with his wife Muneeba and son Aamir in New Jersey. Both these characters, played by Zenobia Shroff and Saagar Shaikh, respectively, also got their own posters.
Shroff, while predominantly associated with American theater, has appeared in the Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.
Mohan Kapur himself is an accomplished Bollywood actor, with close to 30 film credits. His foray into Hollywood was with a host of Hindi dubbing assignments. He’s provided voice dubbing for several MCU films , and was primarily cast as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.
The first Bollywood actor to land on an MCU poster was Eternals star Harish Patel, who played the character of Karun:
However, as the series gets closer to launch, it seems to have drawn several negative reactions from a slew of Marvel fans. These include ‘forced diversity’, Marvel choosing to change Kamala’s original powers, and simply disliking the show’s premise:
Thankfully, there’s a few sane opinions out there:
Ms. Marvel is scheduled to stream on Disney+ Hotstar from June 8th, 2022.
