Netflix is known for its mega-hit shows and its critically acclaimed films. But with a budget of over $200 million USD, The Irishman is one of the streaming company’s biggest original movies ever made. According to The Verge, De Niro has been involved with this film for more than a decade. Netflix came in and picked up the film in 2017 with an intention of building up its catalogue of original productions with Oscar-worthy content. With The Irishman, Netflix wants to make its presence known.

The film is an adaptation of Charles Brandt’s 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses, which revolves around the life of Sheeran, a World War II veteran who becomes a mob hitman for the Bufalino crime family.
