M. Night Shyamalan is back
M. Night Shyamalan is back

Critics say The Visit may be the director’s best film in a very long time

Few Hollywood directors have had a career as topsy-turvy as that of M. Night Shyamalan. He was touted as the next Spielberg (seriously), after back-to-back hits like The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable. Soon after, he faltered with a string of forgettable films and suddenly, no studio wanted to sell a film touted as his project.

But that could have been a good thing for Shyamalan too, because said studios tend to come with their own baggage of opinions, script suggestions and a hundred other things that hamper a director’s vision. Spurred by the encouraging response to his TV show Wayward Pines, Shyamalan is now back with a film – this time, a self-produced one, which allows for no one to tamper with his vision.

The Visit releases in the US today, and no India release date is in sight. But if critics are to be believed, this is one of Shyamalan’s better works in recent time.
