2018 was a great year for Hindi cinema. We had great films like Andhadhun, Stree and Manmarziyan ruling the roost. The films had good content, good direction and really knew how to tell a story. Andhadhun and Manmarziyan also had some pretty good OSTs backing them. However, in order to maintain the balance in the Universe, Bollywood had to give us some pretty crappy movies this year. While films like Uri and Gully Boy have delivered at the Box Office (and how), we also had Kalank which was . . . well, the less said the better.
However, there were these latest Bollywood movies that we expected to be a hit but while some received praise amongst critics, they didn’t manage to do well at the BO. Take Ek Ladki Ko Dekha – it’s a good film with a commendable storyline. It’s a story that needed to be told. However, it managed to make only 19 crores.
The Accidental Prime Minister was supposed to be a hit considering the ongoing saffron wave in the country but we’re glad it flopped. The performances were shoddy and Anupam Kher’s portrayal of Dr Manmohan Singh was a sheer mockery of the esteemed former Prime Minister. It made only 21 crores.
Then there was Thackeray which, like The Accidental Prime Minister could have been a hit but it only made 15 crores. It had a budget of 30 crores. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was supposed to deliver a masterful performance but something tells us that the story was whitewashed like Sanju.
Manikarnika was a good movie and Kangana Ranaut was in top form but with only ₹94.27 crores against a budget of ₹125 crores, we have to declare it a flop.
Sonchiriya was another disappointment with only ₹5.5 crores at the BO against a budget of ₹30 crores.
Junglee had Vidyut Jammwal running around shirtless and looking super hot but it managed to make just about 20.35 crores at the BO.
This rounds up our list of the latest Bollywood movies that we expected to be hits or at least score an average but which flopped.
