The US Government has asked Kardashian to return the rare piece of art that was reportedly brought in from Belgium. Kardashian reportedly purchased a limestone statue, named “Fragment of Myron’s Samian Athena,” in 2016 when she had visited the Axel Vervoordt Gallery in Belgium. The antique sculpture is said to smuggled out from Italy.
The sculpture was brought to LA in 2016 but was suspected to be a “protected cultural property” by the airport authority. A few other decorative pieces, and 40 antique items valued at a staggering $745,882, were also imported with the sculpture, as per several reports.
After two years of this incident, in 2018, Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage sent an archaeologist to study the statue. As per their report, the statue was deemed to have been “looted, smuggled, and illegally exported from Italy”. Italy immediately asked for the statue to be sent back to its rightful place. Years later, Kim Kardashian has been asked to return it by the US Feds.
While the US Feds have filed a civil forfeiture complaint in California against Kardashian, she has, however, denied purchasing the sculpture. AFP reports that the court documents list the purchaser’s name as “Kim Kardashian dba Noel Roberts Trust in Woodland Hills, California.” An invoice for the same also states, “for the sale of the defendant statue by Vervoordt to Noel Robert Trust, dated March 11, 2016.” The said trust is reportedly connected to Kardashian and West’s real estate purchases in the US.
A spokesperson for Kardashian told CNN, “Kim never purchased this piece and this is the first that she has learned of its existence. We believe that it may have been purchased using her name without authorisation and because it was never received (and) she was unaware of the transaction. We encourage an investigation and hope that it gets returned to the rightful owners.”
