It’s been under wraps for a long time but musician-actor Kid Cudi has finally announced his upcoming directorial debut for Netflix, titled Teddy.

For 38-year-old Scott Mescudi, known by his stage name Kid Cudi, the film represents a long process of self-development and change. Putting out a detailed Twitter post, the rapper mentioned been conceptualizing Teddy since 2013.

“I always wanted to write my own movie, so I said fuck it and started doing it,” he shared. “The road has been long, from it being a tv show for years to finally being a film. So it means so fuckin much to finally be able to bring it to the screen next year, and I cant wait for u all to meet Teddy, his friends, his family and take a walk in his world for a bit.”

What’s Teddy all about?

Without giving too much away, Cudi also shared a few details on the film’s premise.

“It’s as if I took the song ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ [his hit 2009 track] and wrote a movie about it,” he adds. “I added a lot of my own personal struggles and experiences in it, so this film is very close to my heart.”

“I know, that deep down, this movie will help people in the same ways my music has. I’m continuing my mission. Now this is a comedy, but it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t sprinkle some real shit in there. It’s trippy, it’s fun, it’s sad, it’s life.”

The project will also spearheaded by a production team featuring giants such as Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, filmmakers Jeymes Samuel and James Lassiter, and more. Cudi also gave a special mention to his ‘homie’ Tendo Nagenda – Netflix’s VP of Original Films.

This marks the second time that this creative posse has saddled up for a film project. Cudi, Jay-Z, Lassiter, and Negenda all came together in 2021’s Black Western film, The Harder They Fall. Cudi, in particular, worked on an award-winning original track for the film, titled Guns Go Bang:
