The US Supreme Court recently struck down the right to abortion by overturning the landmark 1973 “Roe v. Wade” decision which promoted a woman’s right to abortion. Many Hollywood celebs reacted to the decision with raged tweets and video messages. Kendrick Lamar, who was performing at the 2022 Glastonbury Festival, also made a powerful statement as he closed out his headlining set.
Lamar arrived on the stage wearing a crown of thorns with blood dripping down his face. Not only did he wow the audience with his amazing performance but also repeatedly chanted, “They judge you, they judge Christ. Godspeed for women’s rights,” to express his anger toward the new abortion laws in the US.
K-Dot finished his 90-minute set with his latest song Savior from his new album, Mr Morale & The Big Steppers. The rapper pleaded for women’s rights and in all honesty, it is hard to think of a more powerful conclusion to this festival. The rapper repeated the phrase with increasing intensity and stopped mid-sentence to throw his microphone on the ground before walking off stage.
Lamar’s new album Mr Morale & The Big Steppers dropped in May and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. He addressed the themes of guilt, greed, loyalty, power, ambition and prejudice throughout his performance. The last song, Saviour, talks about Covid conspiracies, the Black Lives Matter movement, political issues and his own personal shortcomings.
Kendrick Lamar won the Best Male Hip Hop Artist trophy at the 2022 Glastonbury Festival. He beat out a list of some of hip-hop’s biggest names including Drake, Future, J. Cole, Jack Harlow, Kanye West and Lil Baby. Apart from his performance, Paul McCartney, Little Simz, Pet Shop Boys, Sam Fender, and Billie Eilish also took over the stage.
