Throughout his career, Kanye West has been known by many names. Yeezy, Yeezus and Ye are only a few of them. Now, the rapper has filed a petition to the court to legally change his name and officially become Ye. The Los Angeles Superior Court filing says he wants to forgo his full name for his long-time two-letter nickname, Ye, with no middle name or last name, reports Associated Press.
The 44-year-old cited “personal reasons” in the paperwork he filed; a judge is yet to sign off on this change of name from Kanye Omari West to ‘Ye’.
However, the name means more than to the musician than just an abbreviation of his name.
“I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible, it means ‘you.’ So, I’m you, I’m us, it’s us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion, everything. The album is more of a reflection of who we are,” he told radio host Big Boy.
West also tweeted his intent to change his name back in 2018, writing, “The being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE.”
This moniker was also the title of his 2018 album.
Kanye West has been responsible for many headlines of late. Some causes include his separation from now ex-wife Kim Kardashian and his 10th studio album Donda that remains unreleased with a third unveiling scheduled. His rekindled feud with musician Drake is also a cause for a stir in the media.
West’s four children — North, 8, Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 2 — along with ex-wife Kim Kardashian all share ‘West’ as their surname, so if the rapper gets his wish, he’ll no longer share his last name with them.
