Actress Kangana Ranaut who earned plaudits for her role in 2019’s Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, has announced that she will star in a standalone sequel titled Manikarnika Returns: The Legend of Didda. While the 2019 movie was based on the legendary Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, the sequel will be based on Didda, the warrior queen of Kashmir.

“Humara bharatvarsh sakshi raha hai Jhansi ki rani jaise kai veeranganao ki kahaani ka. Aisi hi ek aur ankahee veergatha hai Kashmir ki ek rani ki, jisne Mahmud Ghaznavi ko ek nahi, do baar haraya (India has seen several bravehearts like the queen of Jhansi. Another such untold story of heroism is of a queen from Kashmir, who defeated Mahmud of Ghazni not once but twice in battle),” Kangana Ranaut wrote in a tweet.

The actress is known to play empowered roles in her movies which challenge the conventional gender constructs. She has given numerous box office hits in Fashion, Queen, Krrish 3 and Panga. Ranaut will also be seen in Thalaivi where she plays J Jayalalithaa, Dhakkad and Tejas.

Having been earlier written off by Bollywood and film critics due to her off-screen persona and accent, Kangana Ranaut has emerged as one of the most powerful women in the Hindi film industry. She is known to hold strong opinions and often makes controversial remarks which are hotly debated on social media.

As of now, it is unclear whether the actress will direct Manikarnika Returns: The Legend of Didda, like she had done with Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. For the 2019 movie, she had shared director credit with Krish and had claimed that she took over the project and reshot most of it. However, Krish has alleged that Ranaut hijacked his project.

According to Ranaut’s sister, Rangoli Chandel, the 2019 film made ₹102 crores in India, and ₹53 crores overseas.
