Chris Evans Would Love To Play The Human Torch Over Captain America
Chris Evans Talks Reviving The Human Torch Over Captain America

“An easier sell to me than coming back as Cap.”

Ah, Captain America. Steve Rodgers has truly been an integral part of of the MCU, with the ‘Man out of Time’ starring in eight films (end credits included). It seems though, that actor Chris Evans is unlikely to return to his most famous role, and instead, might want to revive a certain ‘hottie’ from the mid-2000s.

In a recent interview with MTV News, the 41-year-old actor shared that he would be considerably keener to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Johnny Storm or The Human Torch, instead of good ol’ Cap.

Evans first played the character in the abysmally-reviewed Fantastic Four back in 2005, and its sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Both are relics of a bygone era — a pre-MCU world that ended once the current continuity was birthed in 2008 with Iron Man.

“God, wouldn’t that be great?” Evans said when asked about revisiting the role. “Wouldn’t that be great? No, no one’s ever come to me about that. I mean, I don’t exactly look the same anymore. That was 15, almost 20 years ago. Oh my God, I’m old. But I really love that character, but I think… aren’t they doing something now with Fantastic Four?”

Evans is right. Marvel is currently hard at work on creating their own version of Fantastic Four. While the aim of making a good film on Marvel’s ‘First Family’ has failed thrice over already, that hasn’t stopped the studio from charging ahead – most famous for John Krasinski’s short debut as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:

That said, Marvel hasn’t confirmed whether or not Krasinksi will return to play the role. Other problems also have plagued the film, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts dropping out of the project.

Evans, however, seems delighted at the idea of him returning to his former role. While he admits that Cap has a special place in his heart, he also finds some lost potential in playing the laidback superhero – which arguably was the single redeeming factor of the early Fantastic Four films. (Other than Jessica Alba, maybe.)

“Look, I would love it,” Evans added about playing Human Torch again. “I would love it. That would actually be an easier sell to me than coming back as Cap. You know what I mean? Cap is so precious to me. And you know, I almost don’t wanna disrupt what a beautiful experience that was. But Johnny Storm, I feel like he didn’t really get his day. That was before Marvel really found its footing. So, I loved that role and, you know, who knows?”

Chris Evans most recently appeared as the titular character in Pixar’s Lightyear, currently playing in cinemas worldwide.
