Is Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan A Copy of Tamil Thriller Perarasu? Producer Manickam Narayanan Thinks So

Both films coincidentally feature double roles, but very different ones

Director Atlee has just been slammed with a complaint for allegedly making SRK-starrer Jawan by using the plot of 2006 Tamil film Perarasu.

As per new reports from the Times of India, movie producer Manickam Narayanan raised a complaint with the Tamil Film Producer’s Council (TFPC), an influential industry union with over 1,500 members that has lasted for more than forty years. Narayanan, who reportedly owns the rights to the film, says that the stories of Jawan and Perarasu are the same — a claim that the TFPC board will examine after 7th November.

Perarasu is a 2006 Tamil-language action crime film that starred veteran actor Vijayakanth in a double role and was directed by Udhayan.

Described as a ‘fast-paced entertainer’ by Chennai Online, the film revolves around a pair of long-lost twin brothers on opposite sides of the law. While Jawan’s plot remains largely under wraps (pun intended), rumours claim that the film is a ‘heist thriller’ and that Shah Rukh will indeed play a double role in the film — that of a gangster father and his RAW officer son.

With only the double lead roles offering some link between both films, it seems that SRK fans have little to worry about. This isn’t the first time Khan’s films have been accused of plagiarism, however. Back in 2016, several writers suggested that Dear Zindagi was ‘inspired’ by the Canadian TV series Being Erica, with Canada’s Temple Street Productions filing a legal notice with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

In the meantime, Jawan’s filming has continued to tick on, with a recent Chennai shoot schedule wrapping up earlier in October. The film is scheduled to release on 2nd June, 2023.
