After successful stints of playing Aquaman, Duncan Idaho and the mighty Khal Drogo, Jason Momoa might now be starring in a new Minecraft movie. No, seriously; according to Hollywood Reporter, the 42-year old is in final negotiations to sign the contract.
The live-action Minecraft movie, which is now been helmed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) has been in production limbo for quite some time now. The movie was first announced back in 2014 with director Shawn Levy (Free Guy) attached to it.
He then dropped out making way for Rob McElhenny of It’s Always Sunny… and Mythic Quest fame, but that too fell apart, before being picked up by Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist). While the movie did get a tentative release date of 2019 back then, it was again pushed to 2022 with now an all-new director in charge.
For those who are unfamiliar, the movie is based on the popular video game Minecraft, which debuted back in 2011, and allowed players to use blocks to create structures around the world. In 2014 just a few years after its launch, the video game was acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion.
While we don’t know exactly how Warner Bros. plan to make a live-action adaption of a sandbox game, there is a one-line plot summary that sheds some light. It reads, “The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”
Apart from Momoa, the only actor attached to the project was Steve Carell, who has now apparently stepped away from negotiations. With the casting news not fully confirmed yet, we suspect the Minecraft movie may get delayed again. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
