James Corden took over as the host of The Late Late Show back in March 2015. And seven years later, he is ready to say goodbye to the talk show. He had first made the announcement about his exit in April 2022, and now has confirmed his plans to shift back to UK in 2023.
“This will be my last year hosting the show. When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way.
I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there… this has been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, it really has. I’ve never taken this job for granted,” he had said back in April.
A return to the UK could be an interesting move for Corden who has been a part of many successful BBC shows earlier. However, the Brits are not happy about him coming back to the country. A petition begging for him to stay back in the US has started circulating online. The petition claims that the UK already has enough to deal with.
The petition reads, “”Eight years ago, James Corden left the UK for the US to work on The Late Show. Since then, we’ve had to collectively deal with the impact of the Tory government, Brexit and Covid-19. But throughout, there was that slight beacon of hope… the absence of James Corden. But now he’s leaving The Late Late Show and is returning to our British pastures. So I beg you, if you do one thing today, please, I implore you to sign this petition.”
The reason listed for not wanting him back was that there was not ‘enough cringe in this small country for him to induce’. Suggestions also listed other alternatives for Corden to choose from instead of the UK. Dumping the chat show host on an isolated Scottish island or sending him over to Ukraine to lend a hand were a few of the recommendations made. The petition has not received many signs as of now but it’s surely being discussed.
Talking more about Corden’s exit from the show, his business partner, Ben Turner, told Variety that he’s “really excited to get James back in the U.K.” While speaking at the Banff World Media Festival in Alberta, he said, “Corden has just got so many strings to his bow, and ‘Late’ is a big commitment that’s taken up so much of his time,” said Turner. “We’re just really excited about having him back in the U.K., and all the stuff that that entails, but it is a big moment for us.” The show host is yet to comment on the whole situation.
