If you aren’t an avid follower of the Emmy Awards but make sure to watch the main event, you wouldn’t know that streaming giant Netflix garnered 160 nominations in 2020. However, it only managed to win two prizes during the televised awards ceremony – Direction of a Limited Series or Made-for-TV Movie for Unorthodox, and Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Julia Garner’s work on Ozark.

In fact, despite Ozark being nominated 18 times this year, Garner’s award was the series’ only win.

Traditionally, HBO has ruled the Emmys and despite Netflix’s 160 nominations (160!), it was HBO that took home 30 Emmys total across the Creative Arts awards and the televised Primetime Emmys ceremony.

HBO’s Watchmen and Succession are relevant to our current situation in this never-ending lockdown and the awards body recognized that. Both of them four awards each during the televised ceremony. While Netflix has been known to green-light a bunch of diverse shows and movies with wide-ranging storylines, it does lack the extremely high-level of programming that HBO has.

Canadian family comedy Schitt’s Creek absolutely swept the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and from the legion of fans it has garnered over the course of its six seasons, it was highly deserved.

However, just like with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel lost out big time. If it weren’t for the Creative Arts awards, Amazon would not have any Emmys this year.
