Hailey Bieber To Lily Collins: Celebs Who Have Responded To Nepotism In Their Own Ways

They said what they said

Hailey Bieber has started the conversation around Nepotism once again. The wildly popular model was seen sporting a T-shirt with the text, ‘Nepo Baby’, a term used to describe public personalities who’re born into celebrity. Always a hot topic (Koffee With Karan, anyone?) nepotism is now back on our feeds, thanks to Bieber’s IDGAF fashion choices. Netizens, of course, have things to say:

Bieber, however, isn’t the first to address the issue publicly. Others, too, have resorted to social media and interviews to tell their side of the story, we suppose. Here’s a look at what nepo babies have had to say, well, about nepo babies:

Lily-Rose Depp

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis’ daughter, Lily-Rose Depp said in an interview that the public cares a lot more about lineage than the industry itself. She made her debut with the film, Tusk, which also starred her father. Then, she went on to become the brand ambassador for Chanel, whose creative director she met through Paradis. “The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people who are casting you in things. Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that,” Depp had said at the time.

Paris Brosnan

Model and filmmaker, Brosnan is the son of journalist Keely Shaye Smith and Pierce Brosnan of James Bond fame. Addressing the topic he had once said, “I think we need to just be grateful for our blessings… It’s always gonna be there and we got to recognize it. At the end of the day, we’re just grateful to be here.”

Kendall Jenner

Internet’s favourite child Kylie Jenner came to the fore thanks to the popular American sitcom, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, which was co-produced by her mother Kris Jenner. The Kardashian-Jenner clan — comprising mummy Jenner and sisters Kylie and Kendal Jenner, along with Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian — is a celebrity clique like the world hasn’t seen before. Their privilege is obvious but during a KUWTK reunion Jenner said about the matter, “I went to every single casting and ran all over not only New York City but all over Europe trying to get a job and make my way. Of course, I had a platform, and I never took that for granted. I always knew that that was there, but that almost made my job a little bit harder. Only because people probably didn’t want to hire me because I was on a reality TV show.”

Lily Collins

The daughter of veteran musician Phil Collins landed her first job as the voice of baby ape in the movie, Tarzan. The soundtrack was composed by her father, too. In an interview, she said, “When I first met with agents, I was asked, ‘Well, what makes you so special? Everybody in LA is a cousin or a daughter of someone.’ … At the beginning, that was the most interesting thing about me.” She further added, “Now I’ve done eight films, it’s an afterthought. I get kids who say, ‘Oh, I love your movie, but my mum loves your dad.’ It’s really nice to be able to share that with him, but it doesn’t define who I am career-wise.”

Emma Roberts

Roberts started her career with a small role in the film America’s Sweethearts. This film also starred her aunt, Julia Roberts, which again sparked speculations about how she got the role. Responding to this she said, “A lot of people think that, and they talk about nepotism, which I think is so ridiculous considering it’s obviously not true; because I’ve auditioned for so many things and never gotten the part. Also it’s like, you know, maybe someone can get you one part, but they can’t really get you 10 parts.”
