All those who loved the music of Rock On!! are surely going to suffer from a deep sense of disappointment because, sadly, the album for the sequel does little justice to one’s musical sensibilities.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy may have displayed some first-rate musicianship along with adding their trademark hooks in the album of Rock On!! 2, but here we’re referring to the limitations they faced as composers, due to the below-average singing abilities of Farhan Akhtar.
Here are some of the reasons why we don’t like the Rock On!! 2 soundtrack.
Farhan Akhtar may have successfully donned numerous hats as an actor and director, but unfortunately, he is not a singer. However hard he tries, Farhan Akhtar cannot carry a tune. Period.
Farhan’s ‘You Know What I Mean’ tried to emulate the success of ‘Pichle Saat Dino Mein’, but failed miserably. Even ‘Woh Jahaan’ sounded better, as long as Shraddha was crooning to the number, until Farhan decided to dive right in.
You know What I mean
Sharaddha Kapoor, of course, sounds much better than Farhan in the album but fails to create the same impact as the hit numbers ‘Yeh Tumhaari Meri Baatein’ and ‘Phir Dekhiye’ from Rock On!! . Some of her noteworthy songs include ‘Udja Re’ which may (or may not) as well be the result of the autotune phenomenon that has been plaguing the music industry. Who knows!
Udja Re
The songs that do not feature Farhan or Shraddha are pretty much the best parts about the album. ‘Hoi Kiw/Chalo Chalo’, a song which possesses North Eastern roots, is sung by Usha Uthup and a Shillong-band known as Summersalt, that sings in Khasi. Usha Uthup is splendid in the song that is infectious, raw and a great change from the usual material the album serves us.
Hoi Kiw
Lastly, Javed Akhtar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s previous collaborations have been far more fruitful that the current one. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics for Rock On!! 2 include stanzas such as ‘Chaand ki kashti mein humne kiya safar’, which definitely do not resonate with the current times or millennial sensibilities.
