While the critics cannot get enough of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, the Indian Air Force (IAF) isn’t as thrilled with the movie.
In a letter penned to the censor board, the IAF has stated that while Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions promised authenticity, the film has not presented all facts and is misleading. “Certain scenes and dialogues in the movie and its trailer, which was forwarded to this Office for viewing, have been found to portray the IAF in an undue negative light. In the aim to glorify the screen character of Ex-Fit Lt Gunjan Saxena, M/s Dharma Productions presented some situations that are misleading and portray an inappropriate work culture especially against women in the IAF,” the letter further stated.\
Now, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, has come out against the portrayal of the Indian Air Force in actor Janhvi Kapoor’s latest film, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. She has urged the makers to “discontinue the screening” of the film, which released on Netflix on August 12.
However, the real-life Gunjan Saxena has come out in support of the movie.
“Let me inform readers with utmost conviction and honesty that even though cinematic liberties were exercised in my biopic by the filmmakers, what they did not miss or exaggerate was me, the real Gunjan Saxena. I admit without hesitation that I have even more of an iron will and resoluteness than was portrayed in the movie,” Saxena wrote on NDTV.
She also stated that it “was absolutely disheartening to see a small group of people trying to dent this hard-earned reputation with nonsensical rants”.
