Disney has kicked off its Stars Wars Celebration event in style. Along with a host of announcements, the company also gave us our first look at Andor, the upcoming Disney Plus series starring Diego Luna.
The series will explore Luna’s character five years before the events of Star Wars: Rogue One, and promises to be a “tense nail-biting spy thriller.” The 12-episode season will start premiering on the platform on August 31.
Here’s what the official synopsis says:
“The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
While speaking about the show, Diego Luna was quoted as saying, “You’re not going to recognize Cassian Andor in the beginning.” What now remains to be seen is if any other Rogue One cast members like Saw Gerrera played by Forest Whitaker will make an appearance.
The series will be helmed by Tony Gilroy, who has previously written all the Bourne movies and has also worked on 2016’s Rogue One. Joining Diego Luna will be Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly.
Star Wars: Andor was scheduled to premiere last year but it was delayed due to the Covid pandemic. Along with Andor, the streaming service will also stream the third season of The Mandalorian, the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka series and a Lando Calrissian “event series.”
