After massive speculations about who’d be roped in for the lead role in the Noti Binodini biopic, it’s now confirmed that actress Kangana Ranaut has been zeroed in on to play the character Binodini Dasi. Ranaut announced the same on Wednesday. The movie is being helmed by ace filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar, who has previously worked on Parineeti.
In a statement, Ranaut said, “I am a very big fan of Pradeep Sarkaar ji and very happy for this opportunity. Also, this will be my first collaboration with Prakash Kapadia ji and I am completely thrilled to be part of this remarkable journey with some of the greatest artists of this country.”
The shoot for this biopic will reportedly commence next year after Ranaut wraps up her ongoing projects. Previously the rumors were rife that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan would be playing this role, but eventually, Ranaut was onboarded to play the lead.
Here’s What Twitter Has To Say:
Binodini Dasi was one of the most popular artists in the Bengali theatre industry. She was brought up among sex workers and kicked off her career as a courtesan. But, on turning 12, under the guidance of Girish Chandra Ghosh, Dasi started her theatre journey. She was known for mixing European and indigenous styles of makeup for her acts. Another interesting piece of trivia is that she was one of those South Asian actresses who wrote her own autobiography, which she named Amar Katha (My Life).
The acclaimed theatre personality often talked about her hardships and how she survived the male-dominated society of the early 90s. It is alleged that a businessman from Kolkata made her his mistress, and even constructed a theatre for her, which was named Star Theatre. The theatre still runs today carrying the history within itself.
While her popularity rose by leaps and bounds by the age of 24, she mysteriously retired from the profession at around the same time. No one really knew why she left, but in the 12 years of priceless service as an artiste on-stage, Dasi played the iconic role of Sita and Radha. That aside, the deceased theatre star reportedly portrayed over 80 characters in her career. She was just 41 years old at the time of her passing.
While Ranaut gears up for Indira Gandhi’s biopic Emergency, she now has a second project in the offing. Prior to this, the actress has been a face of biopics like Thalaivi.
