Fans are particularly impressed with the stop-motion animation style used in the film.

We’ve been hearing for years that Guillermo del Toro has been quietly working on a Pinocchio movie for a while now. Now, Netflix has dropped the first teaser trailer of the stop motion animated film about the classic children’s tale.

Set to release this holiday season in December 2022, here’s what the official synopsis reads like, “Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.”

Pinocchio was created by Italian writer Carlo Collodi, for his children’s novel by the name of The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883). For the uninitiated, Pinocchio was created by a woodcarver, Geppetto in a Tuscan village. While he was created as a wooden puppet, Pinocchio dreamed of becoming a real boy. He’s known for his nose which grows long when he lies.

In the past, Disney had produced an animated feature-length movie on the character back in 1940. Since then, Pinocchio has appeared in all forms of fiction throughout the years. Now with Del Toro’s visual expertise on hand, and the incorporation of stop-motion animation, it’ll be interesting to see how the upcoming movie pans out.

The star cast of the movie includes Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Other members include Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton and a frequent Del Toro collaborator, Ron Perlman.

Here’s what the internet has been saying about it.
