Not many Bollywood movies have made noise as big as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati in recent times. With Deepika Padukone’s unibrow, Ranveer Singh’s Allaudin Khilji character and Shahid Kapoor’s chemistry with Deepika making the rounds in the news, there’s something that residents of the internet missed. The armours on our leading men, which is the brainchild of a designer and a psychologist duo.

Designer Vipul Amar and psychologist Harsheen Arora together worked on a psychological analysis of the characters and 300 years old leather techniques that made up the Padmavati wardrobe.

Bhansali was apparently convinced that these were the right people for the job and seems like he wasn’t wrong. After creating looks for Ranveer, he was impressed enough for Shahid’s armour to be also created by them.

While designing the entire set of outfits, they studied the characters of Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) and Allaudin Khilji. They found that Singh is an embodiment of love and patriotism whereas Khilji is all about the conquest and invasion. Arora said that getting into the psyche of the character helped to evoke the elements in both their armours. On one hand, there’s Shahid’s character who embodies nobility and honour, has a colour palette of a royal, while Ranveer’s character is that of a Sultanate ruler that has bold features like lion embellishments. While some of the materials have been constant in both designs, the treatments of their looks have been different. She also claims that these armours helps the actors time travel into the era’s characters’ lives.

The armours apparently have special mannequins and storage systems like vintage trunks. They will be special because after all, you don’t get many chances to walk, talk and dress like a historic figure.
