Marvel's first family gets the retro treatment in this massive, long-awaited reboot

Marvel’s Fantastic Four is finally stepping into the MCU, and the first trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps is loaded with nods to its comic book roots, past adaptations, and even some deep-cut Marvel lore. Set in the 1960s, this film is embracing the retro aesthetic of the Fantastic Four’s early days—and the trailer is filled with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details.

Here's a look at all the unique references, secret tidbits and easter eggs we spotted:

The trailer kicks off with Reed and Sue welcoming us to the Baxter Building, the Fantastic Four’s iconic headquarters. First introduced in Fantastic Four #3 (1962), this skyscraper is arguably Marvel’s most famous superhero lair.

Sunday Family Dinners

Reed mentions their tradition of family dinners every Sunday at 7 p.m., a fun nod to the team’s frequent mealtime gatherings in the comics, especially their annual Thanksgiving feasts.

Playing with Aspect Ratios

Director Matt Shakman, known for WandaVision, plays with the trailer’s aspect ratio. When Reed and Sue introduce the Baxter Building, the screen subtly shifts—much like WandaVision’s format changes.

H.E.R.B.I.E. Returns

Ben Grimm is seen cooking in the kitchen alongside H.E.R.B.I.E., the robot introduced in The New Fantastic Fouranimated series in 1978. The bot later debuted in Fantastic Four #209 (1979) and was created by Reed and Master Xar to help locate Galactus.

Reed’s Multiverse Bridge

A brief shot shows Reed working on what appears to be plans for a Multiverse Bridge. This device first appeared in Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #1 (2009), designed to observe parallel worlds—potentially teasing multiversal chaos.

Marvel-1 Rocket

We get a glimpse of the Fantastic Four’s spaceship, which resembles Marvel-1, the experimental rocket that first appeared in Fantastic Four #1 (1961). It’s the ship that kickstarted their legendary transformation.

“Kaplan’s” TV Store

While Ben watches an old interview of himself and Reed, the store’s name—Kaplan’s—appears on the TV. This could be a nod to Fantastic Four: First Steps writer Jeff Kaplan.

Vintage Thing Masks

Kids in the trailer wear masks resembling a rare Thing face mask sold in 1967, just a few years after the comic books made a debut—a nostalgic nod for longtime fans.

Fantasticar Cameo

A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot reveals a blue flying car, likely the Fantasticar, the team’s primary mode of transport, first introduced in Fantastic Four #3 (1962).

John Malkovich’s Mystery Role

The trailer briefly shows John Malkovich’s character, sparking speculation. A leading theory suggests he could be playing Ivan Kragoff, aka Red Ghost, a villain first introduced in Fantastic Four #13 (1963).

Galactus Looms Large

A massive shadow over NYC strongly resembles Galactus’s classic helmet design. The planet-devouring entity first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 (1966) and remains one of their most formidable foes, and one of the greatest foes faced in the Marvel Universe.

A Beatles Reference

The final shot's set design mirrors The Ed Sullivan Show stage from The Beatles’ first U.S. performance in 1964, tying into the film’s retro aesthetic.

This trailer is clearly packed with details for hardcore fans, and with Galactus, Silver Surfer, and possibly the Future Foundation in play, Fantastic Four: First Steps is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most exciting entries yet. What Easter eggs did you spot?
