Disney has been working on various live-action films including Emma Stone starrer Cruella. The film is a prequel to the animated classic, 101 Dalmatians, where Stone will be seen embodying the iconic Disney villain, Cruella de Vil. The makers of Cruella shared the first trailer of the film recently and gave us a chilling first glimpse of what’s to come in the future. The trailer was everything people were talking about, where some fans even went to compare Stone’s character to that of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

Stones learned about these parallels being drawn between her character named Estella, and Joker and reacted to the same saying that Cruella will be “very different” from the DC villain. Stone told Total Film that “It’s very different from Joker in many ways…I would never even remotely compare myself to Joaquin Phoenix. I wish I was more like him.”The comparison came after fans drew a similarity between the trailers of Stone and Phoenix’s respective films. The gritty tone, the sombre voice-overs, and portentous music are some elements that we can see in both the trailer of Joker and Cruella.

The film’s director, Craig Gillespie also responded to the comparison being made between his film and Todd Phillips’ film. “There are some really deep, emotional things that Cruella’s dealing with that send her to the villainous darker side. So in that sense, it is [similar], but it’s definitely its own thing. Just to sort of reframe Cruella, I thought it was important to show this darker side of her. But there’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of humour in it. There’s a lot of absolutely delightful banter and rhythm to the style of it, which is different from Joker.” he said.

Stone’s film will revolve around the story of how her character takes on the world of high fashion. The film will track the journey of her turning into the infamous dog-napper, who we all have grew up hating. The official synopsis of the film reads, “Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.” The film also stars Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser and Mark Strong in pivotal roles. The film is scheduled to release on May 28, 2021.
