Thor and his (new) friends for work are set to be back in the coming two weeks. Taika Waititi’s highly anticipated Thor sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder had its world premiere recently on June 23. With Thor: Ragnarok being considered the best Thor movie in the series, expectations for the sequel are high. Fortunately, though, they seem to have been met.
Initial impressions from the world premiere largely appear to be on the positive side, with many critics raving about Christian Bale’s Gorr. Similar praises have echoed about Portman and Thompson’s performances as Foster and Valkyrie respectively.
Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will have to team up with everyone’s favourite rock person Korg, Valkyrie and Jane Foster to stop Gorr the God Butcher from wreaking havoc in the MCU. But this time he also has the help of Natalie Portman, who is seen wielding a broken Mjolnir in all the trailers that we’ve seen.
Here’s what the official synopsis reads, “Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to his surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer. Together, they set out on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance.”
Judging from the trailer, the Taika Waititi movie will loosely be based on Jason Aaron’s Gorr The Godbutcher series (Thor: God of Thunder #5). However, it also appears to take elements from Jane Foster’s Thor series (Jane Foster & the Mighty Thor (2022) #1), which sees her getting the possession of the enchanted hammer, but at a cost. As a fan of both the comic books and Thor: Ragnarok, we’re counting on Taika to deliver his magic again. Until then, here are seven things we hope will be part of the movie.
