DDLJ Gets A Musical In The Form Of ‘Come Fall in Love’

The YRF-backed project has roped in a stellar cast and crew for the world premiere of the show which will make its debut in San Diego this fall

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge managed to set unrealistic standards of love for a generation that is still looking for their Raj or Simran, probably, now on Bumble. And while we might be failing at finding love, DDLJ is going places. After 27 years of its release, the film is being adapted into a Broadway musical. The Old Globe Productions have joined hands with Yash Raj Film to introduce the world to this unique love story titled Come Fall in Love — The DDLJ Musical cast. 

 

The YRF-backed project has roped in a stellar cast and crew for the world premiere of the show which will make its debut in San Diego this fall. The production company’s head honcho, Aditya Chopra, will be helming the project. Rob Ashford (best known for Disney’s Frozen The Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Boys from Syracuse) has been roped in as the choreographer. Nell Benjamin of Legally Blonde and Mean Girls will be working on the book and lyrics. Music composed by Indian songwriters Vishal Dadlani & Sheykhar Ravjiani will also be featured. 

When Is The Premiere?

The musical begins performances on September 1 and will continue to run till October 16, 2022. The official opening will take place on September 14. It can be seen in the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in The Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. The tickets will go on sale today at www.TheOldGlobe.org. 

The Cast

Chopra will direct a cast of 30. The titular role of Simran (originally essayed by Kajol Devgn) will be played by Shoba Narayan. She is best known for her work in Broadway’s Disney’s Aladdin as Princess Jasmine. Austin Colby has been roped in to play the protagonist, Rog Mandel, which in the original film, was Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Raj Malhotra.

Irvine Iqbal as Baldev (Simran’s father), Rupal Pujara as Lajjo (Simran’s mother), Vishal Vaidya as Ajit (Baldev’s friend in India), Siddharth Menon as Kuljt (Ajit’s son), Kate Loprest as Emily “Minky” Soulard (Simran’s sister), Jeremy Kushnier as Roger Mandel, Sr. (Raj’s father) are also a part of the cast. 

 

Talking about his association with the project, Chopra stated, “I can’t wait for audiences to see Come Fall in Love — The DDLJ Musical at The Old Globe with this amazing cast. I am thrilled to be making not only my stage debut but my American debut. The film with all new English songs has allowed me to revisit my original vision for DDLJ, and share with audiences this love story between an American man and an Indian woman.”

He added, “It is truly an expansion of the success story of DDLJ. Any lover of the film will rediscover its beauty, and the English-speaking world will fall in love with Rog, Simran, and India. Bollywood and Broadway will meet for an exciting theatrical experience.”

The original film revolved around Raj and Simran’s love story. The two fall in love, when left stranded in Switzerland together, and fight against all odds to spend the rest of their lives together. The DDLJ Musical will be a fresh and exciting new look at the landmark film, reviving it for a new generation and in a new medium.
