Christian Bale might just be the baddest villain to be entering the MCU franchise, but ironically, he didn’t even know what MCU stood for until recently. The actor, who has always had a penchant for quirk, revealed that he didn’t know the full form for MCU, until he signed Thor: Love and Thunder. The Batman Begins star was asked if he had any reservations about playing another comic book character after Batman. He told Total Film Magazine, “Absolutely not, no. That didn’t even enter into my head at all.”
“I’d read that, and people would go, ‘Oh, look at this! He’s entered the MCU!’ And I’d go, ‘I’ve done what? I haven’t entered s—, thank you very much.’ I’m like, ‘The MCU?’ I had to ask what that was,” he said.
The actor went on to talk about the long conversations he had had with director Taika Waititi about his character. “There’s obviously sort of a Nosferatu slight attitude. Taika and I wanted to do a whole dance, which we didn’t get to do, but we had all this sort of Kate Bush stuff that we worked at. But I think he just realized he was never going to be allowed to put that in the final film.”
Bale also revealed how he regretted Googling the comic character. “You sort of go, ‘I know what he does.’ It’s right there in the name, isn’t it? But I did make the mistake of Googling him and, oh no! [In the comics] he runs around in a G-string all the time. And I thought, ‘They don’t have the right man for that!’ But I always did think about what he could do with this in front of a blue screen. He could chuck on whatever he wants later on.”
In the movie, Bale will be essaying the role of Gorr, who comes with a tragic back story. In the comic, the Marvel supervillain is born on a planet with no name. He is a faithful believer of God until he loses his parents, wife, and children because of starvation. He then, plans to avenge the Gods and upon finding a weapon called All-Black The Necro, he murders the first God. Ultimately, arriving on Earth, where he meets Thor and tortures him to extract information about the Asgardians.
Taika Waititi is back in the director’s seat for Thor: Love and Thunder. The film is produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum and will see a bunch of cameos, including one with Russell Crowe as Zeus. Plus, Guardians of the Galaxy stars, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper are set to make a comeback for this one.
