Soon after the release of the Bell Bottom trailer, #LaraDutta took the top spot on Twitter’s trending.
In the spy thriller set in 1984 and inspired by true event, Dutta is playing the nation’s former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. In the trailer the 46-year-old is unrecognisable, and a spitting image of the woman she is playing.
Many have also commended the efforts of the make-up team.
At the press conference where the trailer was released to the world, media persons were initially frazzled, asking who Dutta was playing.

“If anyone is able to guess, then I will take all their family members free to the theatres,” she promised.
After much prodding, even by Akshay Kumar, Dutta finally gave in “so you did see me in the trailer. I’m playing Mrs Indira Gandhi. That’s me.”
Discussing her latest screen persona, she divulges to the press that all it took was a phone call for her to play the political figure.
“But yes, of course, there is a great responsibility when you’re portraying somebody who is an iconic figure like her,” she said.
“As you all know that the film deals with a hijack situation that happened during her tenure. Given the dramatic events that were unfolding, she was somebody who was very centred and not prone to any dramatics. So, it was important to portray her in that form,” she continued.
“I had a great time. There was a lot of homework and research that went behind it. But it was an opportunity of a lifetime that I’m thankful for,” she added.
In Bell Bottom, we will see Akshay Kumar in the titular role, as an undercover RAW agent. Actress Vaani Kapoor plays the role of his wife while the film also stars Huma Qureshi. Bell Bottom, based on a true story in which Akshay Kumar’s character is assigned the mission of rescuing 210 hostages from a hijacked Indian plane.
Bell Bottom was the first Bollywood movie to have started its shooting schedule at an international location after the nationwide lockdown last year. Directed by Ranjit M Tewari, Bell Bottom will release in cinemas on August 19.
