Star Swedish DJ Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, was found dead earlier today, his publicist confirmed.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” his publicist Diana Baron said in a statement. “He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
Avicii started releasing music in the late 2000’s on the Laidback Luke Forum, and broke out in 2011 with the megahit ‘Levels’, charted around the world and found him recognition at the Grammy’s.
He released his first studio album ‘True’ in 2013, which featured the crossover hit ‘Wake Me Up!’ The song fused EDM, folk, and country, and cemented his prominence on the international dance music scene.
Avicii had struggled in the past with health issues. He suffered from acute pancreatitis, onset by excessive drinking. In 2014, he was forced to cancel tour dates to recover from having his gallbladder and appendix removed.
He eventually took the decision to stop touring for health reasons. The exact cause of his death is still uncertain.
