10 years after the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Endgame beat James Cameron’s 2009 released science-fiction film, Avatar, to become the highest-grossing film ever in the history of cinema in 2009, Avatar has taken the score back. Endgame remained on the top for a good eighteen months but now that Avatar was re-released in China on March 12, it has overtaken Avengers‘ box office business in terms of gross collection.

When Avatar released in 2009, the film raked in USD 2,789.7 million. The film had managed to beat Leonardo DiCaprio starrer Titanic’s business to become the highest-grossing film. Russo Brothers then released their Marvel movie in 2019, and earned USD 7 million edge over Avatar with a collection of USD 2,797.5. This record was unbreakable until now, when Cameron’s film, once again, bounced back and grossed $3.22 million at the box office. The total business of the film now stands at a sum of $2.7926 billion, while Avengers: Endgame was leading the game at $2.7902 billion previously.
Marvel Studios took the defeat sportingly, and shared a tribute video on their social media handle honouring Cameron and Avatar’s producer Jon Landau. Russo Brothers also shared an Endgame theme artwork saying, “Passing the gauntlet back to you.” The superhero film saw Iron Man, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Star-Lord among others unite to fight the ultimate evil. The film received rave reviews from all across the globe, and also earned a 94 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest for any Avengers film.
