The lockdown affected the film business gravely where many film-makers decided to opt for OTT releases for their projects. Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Gulabo Sitabo was among the first few films to skip a theatrical release and opt for the digital route. Many distributors and fellow film-makers reprobated this move, and assured their fans that they will release their film in cinemas only. Amongst the many big banner films that waited for the restrictions to ease down was Akshay Kumar starrer Soorayavanshi. The film is finally making its way to the theatres on April 30, 2021.
Karan Johar took to Twitter to share the grand news with fans on March 15, and announced that the film will be releasing this year in April. The film was scheduled to release on Diwali 2020 after the restrictions eased, but the makers deemed it fit to wait and see how things unfolded after the lockdown was lifted, and then release the film accordingly.
The news comes as a celebration for the audience, who has been waiting with bated breath to see their favourite stars on the big screen. However, Sooryavanshi is not the only film that will be making it to the theatres after the long wait. Here is a list of films that will also release in cinemas in 2021:
Bell Bottom
Bell Bottom‘s shoot came to a halt after the lockdown was imposed worldwide. The makers wanted to shoot the film abroad and waited for things to become better before they start shooting for it. The team of Bell Bottom was the first one to fly abroad and complete the shoot. Kumar’s film is now scheduled to release in theatres on May 28.
’83
Ranveer Singh-starrer ‘83 is based on India’s first World Cup win in 1983. The Kabir Khan directorial was expected to release in April last year but will now make it to the theatres on June 4, 2021. The film also stars Deepika Padukone, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar, and Amrita Puri in key roles.
Laal Singh Chaddha
Laal Singh Chaddha would be Aamir Khan’s next film after the failure of Thugs of Hindostan. The film was supposed to release on Christmas last year, but the date was shifted indefinitely due to the lockdown. The makers are in no mood to release the film on an OTT platform and are eying for a Christmas 2021 release for the film.
Brahmastra
Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer Brahmastra is one of the most anticipated films currently. The film was also looking for an early summer release date in 2020 for the movie but the plans were altered after the pandemic-imposed lockdown affected the film’s shoot. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film was then supposed to release in theatres on December 4, 2020, but now we think the team will be eyeing for a year-end release, and not opt for an OTT release.
Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai
2020 saw no Salman Khan releases and his fans were eagerly waiting to see the actor on the big screen. Khan had promised an Eid 2021 release last year but due to the pandemic, that didn’t happen. Rumour has it that the makers will be opting for an OTT release for Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai but Khan later assured that nothing of the sort will happen. Standing true to his promise, the film is now releasing on this Eid i.e. May 13.
Gangubai Kathiawadi
Alia Bhatt’s first collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali was initially scheduled for a release on September 11 last year, The shoot, however, was halted during the pandemic, and the makers have now shifted the film’s release date to July 30. Gangubai Kathiawadi will see Bhatt essay the role of Gangubai, a brothel owner in Mumbai’s Kamathipura area.
Sooryavanshi will mark Akshay Kumar’s reunion with Katrina Kaif after many years. The film will also see Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn in a cameo appearance. Sooryavanshi is the fourth film from Rohit Shetty’s cop drama universe after Singham, Singham Returns, and Simmba.
