The Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation case was one of the most controversial highlights of 2022. So big that Tubi decided to turn it into a documentary. The doc-series sheds light on the tragic relationship and the course of events that led to the trial. While the team of Hot Take: The Depp/Heard recently unveiled a trailer, fans couldn’t help but notice how the two lead actors in the clip bore an uncanny resemblance to the former couple.

So, who is playing Depp and Heard in the documentary? WELL, Megan Davis and Mark Hapka have been roped in to play the titular roles. Davis is a popular face in the US television industry. She is known for roles in shows like American Horror Story, Bones, and 2 Broke Girls.

Hapka was first noticed for portraying the lead role of spirit ‘Zach’ on the Ghost Whisperer spin-off Ghost Whisperer: The Other. His stint as Nathan Horton on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives is one of his most memorable offerings yet.

Talking about being a part of the film, the duo told Entertainment Tonight, “It wasn’t right away a ‘hell yes,’ because we got questions, you know. What’s the script? What’s the approach? Is it a biased approach, is it a neutral approach?”

Hapka added, “We were on the same page, I think, of how we wanted to tell this story, which as neutral as possible and authentic to the testimony, authentic to what was shared, try to avoid embellishing at all costs, and make as neutral a movie as possible, because that’s, in our opinion, good filmmaking.”

Detailing how it felt to play Heard on the screen, Davis enthused, “It is hard because you want so badly to feel like whoever sees this, they would feel seen and feel understood. And for me, part of my choosing to take the role, was because I felt there were a lot of things that I saw in her and heard in her, that I understood, and I saw the way the world was treating this real human being, and I felt like if there’s an opportunity that I could maybe bring some understanding and love and compassion to this person…that’s all I think any artist wants to do.”

The defamation case, which played out for over six weeks in a US court, takes the centre stage in the documentary’s narrative. Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s chief content officer, told Variety that the film is set “to capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer”.
