The series will be set during the second age, before the events of the movies.
Amazon has finally dropped a teaser for the upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show, and let’s just say it is as precious as we were hoping it to be. Called ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.’ the series will debut on September 2nd, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
The show will be set during the Second Age, a couple of thousand years before Frodo and Sam’s journey towards Mount Doom began.
As per the official description, “This epic drama … will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and one of the greatest villains that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness … From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”
Amazon reportedly shelled out a staggering $465 million on the first season of the show, in addition to the $250 million paid to acquire the rights. In comparison, each season of ‘Game of Thrones’ used to costs HBO $100 million per season.
The series will feature both old and new characters, portrayed by an ensemble cast of Morfydd Clark playing Elven leader Galadriel (played by Cate Blanchett in the movies), “Game of Thrones” alums Robert Aramayo and Joseph Mawle, Nazanin Boniadi (“How I Met Your Mother”), Ismael Cruz Córdova (“The Mandalorian”) and Markella Kavenagh (“The Cry”), and others.
